They were both tense, for they knew that if they went too far to the left they would be swept against the rock and too far to the right would mean being carried all the way in against the walls of Azul Island. Pitch said warningly, “Careful now, Steve.”Ī moment later they stopped rowing, but their oars remained in the water, directing the course of the dory and holding her back from riding in on top of the swells. Steve saw that they were nearing the large rock, and his face became set. The dory fell swiftly into a deep trough, then rose high with the next swell. “But if we do,” Steve said, “we’ll be glad to have everything with us. (A note of caution: the book does contain two fights to the death between horses.) Fifth grade reading level, first grade listening level. In my opinion, they are the two best of Walter Farley’s many works. “Even if we’re able to reach shore, we may not find a way up the sides, you know.” Like The Black Stallion, I give The Island Stallion the highest recommendation simply on its ability to cultivate dreams. He was sitting beside Steve, both pulling hard on their oars. “Perhaps it was silly to bring all this gear along,” Pitch said. They had broken camp, and now their backpacks, along with several coils of rope and Pitch’s pick and shovel, lay at the bottom of the dory as the small boat lightly rode the high swells. To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt: What reading level is The Island Stallion book?

When a circus ship sinks off the shore of Maine, the fifteen animals that were aboard drag themselves out of the water and stagger into the local village. I've heard time and again from other librarians, both public and school, that this book is loved by children and many feel it is destined to become a children's classic. I don't agree with the review stating this book comes on too strong or is frightening to children. Rollicking rhyme makes this a fun book to read and to hear and the illustrations are bold, colorful and detailed, with charming Victorian-era characters. Paine is the villain of the story, his appearance in caricature and his bumbling Keystone Cop type behavior makes him non-threatening to children. The children love looking for the animals and pointing them out. In an ingenious interactive picture, the animals are hiding in plain sight from Mr. The islanders help the animals elude the circus owner, aptly named Mr. The circus owner, who initially abandoned the animals in the shipwreck, wants them back to work for him and visits the island to find them. They swim to an island and soon become friends with the inhabitants. With rhyming text and stunning illustrations, the book tells of a story how fifteen circus animals were saved from a ship wreckage and their cruel circus owner. The author changed the details to make it a fun read for the young kids. This is a heartwarming tale of fifteen circus animals who are shipwrecked off the coast of Maine. The Circus Ship is inspired by a real event that happened in 1836. This is a book that children want to hear over and over again! I am a library director in a small town and a grandmother of ten who is very discerning about what I read to children. It takes an average of 66 days to acquire a new habit. Success is actually a short race - a sprint fueled by discipline just long enough for habit to kick in and take over. The majority of what you want will come from the minority of what you do. Instead of a to do list, you need a success list - a list that is purposefully created around extraordinary results. Achievers always work from a clear sense of priority. Extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus. Below are some of elements of the book that really stuck with me. This book has very practical and useful worksheets/PDFs and trust me, it's totally worth doing those exercises it will help a lot in terms of gaining focus and clarity with your ONE thing. What did you learn from The ONE Thing that you would use in your daily life? I would definitely compare this book to two other books - 1) The Compound Effect and 2) Manage Your Day to Day, Find Your Focus, And Sharpen Your Creative Mind. What other book might you compare The ONE Thing to and why? I read a lot of business and self help books and this is definitely one of the better ones. Where does The ONE Thing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
